School Holidays are Magic!

by Sonja Walker

Shy children and those who have yet to achieve success in the classroom or on the sports field are benefiting from a new school holiday program that is teaching them confidence building skills.

Child psychologists report that magic skills help develop kids' self esteem, so in the July school holidays, Kids First is offering positive new Magic Workshops for kids aged 5-12.

The response has been overwhelming, which is really no surpise given the number of children who need encouragement to feel good about themselves

In a recent study, Dr Sarah Woods, Professor Richard Wiseman and Rebecca Godfrey from the University of Hertfordshire, concluded that being able to perform magic tricks can cause a significant increase in a child's sociability and confidence.

Their research discovered that performing magic proved very effective in promoting both social skills and confidence.

"Learning magic requires self-discipline, an understanding of how other people think, and an ability to entertain," noted psychologist Professor Wiseman. "Also, unlike playing computer games, it encourages children to interact with their friends and family. Because of this, we thought it might be a unique and effective way of developing an important set of psychological skills."

Kids of all ages can learn magic and they do not need to be sporty, outgoing or academically talented to be successful.

So Kids First's Magic Workshops will be more than just a magic show. The exciting half day programs will be led by a professional magician and qualified teachers, giving kids step by step guidance as they learn to perform clever tricks to delight their friends and families.

We hope your child will join us!

Kids First's Magic Workshops will take place on Friday 17 July and Friday 24 July and cost $40 per child.

Mini-Magicians Workshops will cater for 5 to 7 years olds from 9am until 12 noon.

Master's Apprentices Workshops for older kids aged 8-12 will take place from 12.30pm - 3.30pm
