Kids are enjoying NAPLAN preparation

by Sonja Walker

Our NAPLAN Workshops are off to a great start today, with two terrific groups of children in Years 3 and 5 joining us for a day of fun and confidence building exam preparation.

There's quite a bit of debate about NAPLAN in educational circles at the moment, but while the academics argue the pros and cons, the reality for kids is that this test is on...SOON!

Our fantastic teachers, Vickie and Sue are here with me today and, as always, we're enjoying meeting new children and encouraging them to do their best.

I've just spent the last hour with our Year 5 group, giving them some practical tips about how to get the best possible results in the multiple choice section of the Language Conventions part of the NAPLAN test.

So often, we adults assume that children know how to manage multiple choice exams, but sometimes, this is not so. There's always a first time - and when kids are learning - it's good to have someone who is 'in the know' teaching them.

I was able to give them some good advice and it was great to see them take it on board and put it into practise.

They've learnt how to go through a process of elimination to find the best answer and will hopefully remember to double check their answers (they found lots of 'silly' mistakes when we went back over the activity!)

It's not all hard work - we've played games and the popular favourite so far is the 'Boggle Championships'... little do the children know that they are developing their spelling skills with this simple but fun group game!

NAPLAN doesn't have to be a thing that kids worry about...let's hope that after today, the children attending our NAPLAN Workshop will go home confident and ready to take on the world!
