First Aid Lifesavers

by Sonja Walker

If you were involved in First Aid training in the '80s and '90s, you probably sat through mind numbing lectures, endless practical demonstrations and endured theoretical exams that put you under real pressure.

If our experience today is anything to go by, First Aid training has changed - and for the better.

Today, teachers and parents from Kids First enjoyed a Senior First Aid Certificate course facilitated in-house for us at our centre in Brookvale.

We had decided that it was important to get updated information about managing injuries and illnesses commonly experienced by children.

Today's program gave us that - and so much more.

At the end of the day. we all agreed that our Senior First Aid Certificate training day was the most convenient, useful and relevant program we have enjoyed for a long time.

Presented by Jamie, a professional First Aid educator from Surf Lifesaving NSW, the day long course has given us a renewed confidence in our first aid skills - and also taught us many new things.

Jamie certainly knew his stuff! In addition to his role as a First Aid educator, Jamie has enjoyed a long career as a professional lifeguard and crewman with the Westpac rescue helicopter service.

Our group was captivated by his relevant and realistic true stories - and the day flew by, aided by exciting videos of actual emergencies that really helped us to put the theory into practice.

And as for those high pressure tests? GONE!

Instead of two days of training, we were given a workbook and easy to read manual to work through before our one day course. Supported and guided by Jamie, we all managed to renew our skills and pass the simple, but sensible, multiple choice test at the end of the day.

If you have been thinking that you really should update your First Aid qualifications, but don't have the time or energy to sit through the training - think again.

First Aid training, presented flexibly, personally and close to home is the way to go...and one day your ability to respond to an emergency could even save the life of someone you love.
