Mastering Maths is Fundamental

by Sonja Walker

Mastering the basics of times tables, addition, subtraction and division just got easier for children aged 8 to 10.

Maths Fun-damentals is a confidence building new program that focuses on making maths fun.  Term 2 resumes next week at Kids First Children's Services, where weekly classes help kids in Years 3 to 5 master basic maths skills.

Eight year old Thomas Akhurst, from Collaroy, enjoyed the program last term and his mother, Debbie, said that the benefits were immediate.

‘Thomas just loved Maths Fun-damentals', she said.

‘The program was fun, different and very successful because his Kids First teacher, Vickie, used games and puzzles to explain the processes of maths clearly so that Thomas could understand them.'

Debbie said that her son was excited and happy after every class.

‘After just one term, Thomas has become more independent with his homework and his confidence in maths has soared.'

Thomas is not the only child who has enjoyed this program at Kids First. The program is a popular one and there's a good reason why.

Many primary schoolers struggle with times tables, fractions, decimals and the language skills to comprehend the question, yet this knowledge is vital throughout a child's maths education, as well as in life beyond school.

But, let's face it - times tables can be boring - as any adult who learnt them by rote will attest.

So how can we encourage kids who are struggling with maths to get on top of these vital skills?

We change it up, add lots of personal attention and make it FUN.

Kids First's teachers all have many years of classroom experience and they will all tell you that when kids are enjoying themselves, they learn more effectively.

Maths Fun-damentals is different because it is taught face to face by these qualified teachers and takes an imaginative approach to helping kids consolidate their basic skills.

As kids experience games, brainteasers and challenges, their Kids First teachers explain the addition, subtraction and multiplication processes required so that kids can progress to the next step.

It's fun, it's stress free - and they usually have so much fun that they don't even realise that they are learning!

I wish I'd learnt times tables that way when I was a kid!
