Better Start Program for Children with a Disability
Kids First was one of the first services in NSW to be chosen by the Australian Government to support children through the Better Start for Children with a Disability program.
Better Start supports children diagnosed with:
- Cerebral Palsy
- Down Syndrome
- Fragile X Syndrome
- Moderate to severe hearing impairments.
- Moderate to severe sight impairments.
by providing funding support so that eligible children aged 0-6 can access the early intervention they need to grow, learn and meet their potential.

At Kids First, your child can utilise Better Start funding for your choice of individual therapies and small group services.
Our multi-disciplinary team of children’s health professionals has vast experience with special needs kids. They will support your child and work in partnership with you to achieve the goals that are important to your family.
How do I access Better Start Services at Kids First?
1. Register for Better Start
First, you must be registered as eligible for Better Start. Children must have a confirmed relevant diagnosis and be under 6 years of age on 1 July 2011. To do this you should contact Carers Australia to register your child for the initiative via freecall 1800 242 636.
Your child’s eligibility will be assessed when you present the following information:
- Proof of your child’s age, preferably their birth certificate or passport
- Written confirmation of diagnosis
- Proof of your residential status
- Proof of residential address and
- Your child’s Centrelink-generated Customer Reference Number (CRN).
2. Contact Kids First Children’s Services on 9938 5419
After you have registered please contact Kids First where our friendly staff will confirm your child’s registration details and discuss with you the services your child requires. An appointment can then be arranged with one of our Better Start therapists to introduce you to our service and discuss your child’s needs.
